The 2026 World Cup is over and apart from the trophy there was a lot of money given to teams that took part in the game. 

FIFA gave out a total of $871 million to all 48 countries that played. That is the highest money ever given out at any World Cup in the history of football.

The Big Winners

Spain beat Argentina in the final to win the 2026 World Cup and took home $51 million — $9 million more than Argentina earned for winning it in 2022. Winning really does pay.

Argentina reached the final and got $34 million for their efforts.

England came third which is their best outcome at a World Cup since 1966 and took home $30 million.

France finished fourth and got paid $28 million.

Belgium, Norway, Morocco and Switzerland all reached the quarter finals and each were rewarded $20 million.

Brazil, USA, Portugal, Egypt, and Colombia were also part of the teams that went out in the round of 16 and earned $16 million each.

Did Every Team Get Paid Even If They Lost Early?

Yes. Every team that qualified for the 2026 World Cup received nothing less than $12.5 million. 

This was made up of $10 million for competing in the group stage and $2.5 million to help cover the cost of preparing for the tournament before it did begin.

So even the teams that lost all three group games and went home early were still given $12.5 million in their pocket. That is fair enough.

Why Did FIFA Pay So Much More Than Before

The 2026 World Cup was held across three different countries, the USA, Canada, and Mexico. 

That meant teams had to travel much further between games than at any previous World Cup. The travel costs were higher. The preparation costs were very high. Everything cost more.

Football federations from around the world, mainly in Europe, told FIFA that they needed more money to cover these extra costs. 

FIFA heeded and increased the prize money making sure that no team ended up losing money just by showing up and playing.

One small thing to note: Teams that played their games in the United States had to pay some taxes there that teams playing in Canada and Mexico did not have to pay. 

So the actual amount some teams took home was slightly less than the numbers that are shown on the table above.
